Christened with a name signifying a turning point in the Pacific War, the USS Midway's story began in 1943 with its construction. Though commissioned just days after Japan's surrender in 1945, this first-of-its-kind US warship (CV-41) went on to forge a distinguished career.
Beyond its symbolic name, the Midway earned its stripes through service in the Korean War, Vietnam War, the Iran Hostage Crisis, and the Gulf War. After a remarkable 47 years serving the USA, it was decommissioned in 1992 and finally deregistered in 1997. In 2003, it found a new life as a museum ship in San Diego, California.
